Images of Tragedy

  The Tragedy

 Both of the graphic novels focus on the big idea of dealing with tragedy and hardship.  Complete both of the following tasks (A and B) to explore that big idea.

Task A:  Examine how Picasso’s painting The Tragedy connects to and explores the big idea of tragedy and hardship.  Explain how three different parts of the painting connect to the big idea.

Length:  Write one 10-15 sentence analysis paragraph

Steps:

1.  Examine Picasso’s painting The Tragedy.

2.  Make a brainstorming list of how the artist uses the subjects in the painting as well as colour, shading, brushstrokes, etc. to emphasize the idea of tragedy and hardship.

3.  Write a rough copy of a proper 10-15  sentence paragraph which describes three ways that the artist conveys the idea of tragedy or connects to the idea of tragedy in the painting.  Organize your paragraph with a proper topic sentence and transitions.

4.  Edit your draft for errors in thinking and writing in a different colour ink.

5.  Post a polished copy your paragraph to your blog.

Task B: Find another image, photograph or painting that focuses on the big idea of tragedy or hardship and examine how it connects to the big idea.  Explain how three different parts of the painting connect to the big idea.

Length:  Write one 10-15 sentence analysis paragraphs

Steps:

1.  Use Google Images to complete a search on the word Tragedy.

2.  Select a particularly interesting image, follow the image to its source and read about the image and the site that posted it or presented it.

3.   Make a brainstorming list of how the artist uses the subjects in the painting as well as colour, shading, brushstrokes, etc. to emphasize the idea of tragedy and hardship.

3.  Write a rough copy of a proper 10-15  sentence paragraph which describes three ways that the artist conveys the idea of tragedy or connects to the idea of tragedy in the image.  Organize your paragraph with a proper topic sentence and transitions.

4.  Edit your draft for errors in thinking and writing in a different colour ink.
